MAROONS LOSE IN DREARY AFFAIR

KEITH 0 FRASERBURGH 1

Half-time - 0-0

Scorer - Hale(47 pen).

Keith and Fraserburgh tussles are normally quite rousing matches, but last Saturday's game between the pair at Kynoch Park had a decidedly end of season feel to it, with more excitement watching a party political broadcast reports Charlie Simpson.

Allan Hale's penalty conversion two minutes after half-time sealed the win for 'Broch as they keep their hopes alive of ending up in second spot in the league table. If it hadn't been for the penalty award, neither side was likely to score, with chances as extinct as the dodo.

The Maroons had additional support for the afternoon in the shape of a father and son combination both with the first name of Keith Barrett from Luton and son Keith junior who stays in Cardiff. Although they weren't delighted with the result, they were ecstatic at being special guests of the Club for the afternoon.

Keith's cause wasn't helped by the absence of Jamie Lennox who was unavailabe, and on fire striker Cammy Keith who was injured, and unfortunately looks likely to miss the remaining games.

The match started brightly enough for the Maroons with three chances in the opening six minutes. First, Gary Nicol appeared to be sent tumbling inside the penalty area by Russell McBride, but the penalty claims were waved aside. Then Daniel Park fired an angled shot inches wide. The same player also squandered a golden opportunity when he fired the ball straight at the 'Broch goalie.

Proceedings became a bit boring after that with little excitement to get the fans going. The only goal of the game a couple of minutes after the welcome half-time cuppa when Derek Nicol was adjudged to have upended Allan HALE inside the penalty area. The 'Broch striker dusted himself down and duly chipped the ball into one corner with Andy Shearer heading in the other direction.

Keith's lack of cutting edge was reinforced by the fact that they didn't earn their first corner until the 49th minute. Shearer then did well at the other end coming out quickly to block a Robert Morrice shot from 12 yards, whilst a Neil Robertson 20 yard volley flew inches pas the post in the 77th minute.

The Maroons felt aggrieved with seven minutes remaining when they were denied a penalty of their own after a Darren McAllister free kick flew into the 'Broch penalty area and seemed to hit a defender's hand, but any claims were dismissed right away.

Not the normal all action packed tussle between the pair, but six players still found their way into the referee's black book, with Keith's Watt, G Nicol, Park, Niddrie and McCall and 'Broch's Johnston all being yellow carded.
