Keith FC History - Part 3
- The Aberdeenshire Cup was won for a Sixth time in 1978, defeating Huntly 2-1 in a replay at Christie Park after a 2-2 draw at Kynoch Park. The drawn match, played in April was almost abandoned because of a hefty shower of hailstones! At the end of the season ex-Cowdenbeath and Dundee full back Bobby Wilson joined Keith from Lossiemouth as manager, and thus began an incredible period in the Club's history.
- The championship was won for the second time in the Club's history, with new striker Raymond O'Hara notching 38 goals.
- The League Cup came to Keith for the 5th time in 1983 in what was to be Bobby Wilson's last match before moving to take over at Raith Rovers. An Andy Fettes penalty saw off Buckie Thistle 1-0 at Elgin. Bobby's assistant wee Jimmy Wilson, a former Newcastle, Aberdeen, Motherwell and Morton winger, took over the reins, and promptly led the team to runners-up spot in the league. The following season, the Qualifying Cup was won for the third time, an epic struggle over three matches with old rivals Caley ending up with the Maroons winning a second replay 2-0, thanks to goals from Neil Cowie, and the man who went on to notch 125 goals for the club, Charlie Barbour. At the end of that season, the title was won with Barbour heading the League goal charts with 31 goals.
- When the league cup was won by defeating Elgin City 3-1 at Buckeye, the following season, that also meant that all three major North trophies, namely League Cup, Q Cup and League Championship all creaked on the Kynoch Park sideboard at the same time. A truly magnificent feat!
- Two years later in 1987, one of the finest ever players to wear the Maroon jersey, Hamish French, was sold to Dundee United for £30,000.
- The League Cup was won for the 7th and last time in 1988, under the leadership of ex-Celtic and Aberdeen pivot Willie Garner. The Maroons defeated Caley 3-2 at Elgin following a 1-1 draw, a Neil Cowie brace and a single from Jim Pirie doing the business in the replay.
- The biggest game in Keith's history since the 1928 tussle with Celtic took place in 1996 at Pittodrie Stadium. In front of 15,000 fans, they locked horns with might of Glasgow Rangers in the Scottish Cup 3rd Round. The media attention for the two weeks prior to the game was unbelievable with every conceivable national newspaper, and umpteen radio and TV station's clamouring for news and interviews. Unfortunately the Maroons capitulated against the might of Richard Gough, Andy Goram, Ian Ferguson, Alex Cleland etc, and were slaughtered 10-1. However, the biggest cheer of the day came when Mark Garden notched Keith's sole crumb of comfort.
